High Power Binoculars

High power binoculars offer a bird's eye view for a range of activities.

High power binoculars could be needed for anything from hunting to looking at scenery, to bird watching and going on safari. These powerful binoculars are specially designed for careful and close observation. Before you buy them you need to know a bit about how they work.

High powered binoculars are the type used at sea and by adventurers, travellers, etc. They allow a super clear image of whatever you are looking at with a bigger than normal magnification.  15 x magnification makes everything you look at appear fifteen times closer to you and the bigger the lens diameter the more detail you will see as the light enters the lens. A pair of 15 x 80 high power binoculars will suit even the most discerning user.

The first thing to look for in a high power binocular set is correct collimation, which is a technical term for the way the prisms in the lenses are lined up. They should be pointing in the same direction so that light goes along one path. If they are not properly lined up they will cause double vision and eye strain. Some very cheap high power binoculars have come from the Far East and the prisms in the lenses are not lined up properly. Sometimes this cannot be correct and other times it could be but it would cost a lost of money as you need a special machine to collimate the lenses.

High power binoculars like the Fujinon 15 x 80 MT are among the most powerful of high power binoculars you will come across. These are used on commercial fishing boats, for military purposes, especially at sea and astronomy. The 80 millimetre lenses do make these very heavy though. These will cost you around three and a half thousand dollars to buy new. If you do decide to buy used high power binoculars from somewhere like Astromat Classifieds, make sure that you are getting high powered binoculars that have not been modified or tampered with and inspect them well for damage before handing over cash.

A pair of High Power Brunton 15 x 21  Eterna Series prism lensed binoculars are the mid range choice if you do not want to pay thousands of dollars. These are waterproof as against just shower proof, so you will have no problems with condensation and do not have to worry about rain and they have a 3.8 angle of view. These will cost just under $500 but if you look around there are bargains to be had.

Like all kinds of photographic equipment from high power binoculars, and cameras to telescopes it is the quality of the lenses that determines the quality of the finished equipment. The better the lens, the more you will pay as a rule, but be careful to check the collimation of the lenses as explained previously. If high power binoculars are cheap then look for problems with them as they are often cheap for a reason. This is one area where you can find bargains but not very often.
